I have had a dream of working from home since having my first son 17+ years ago. I knew I wanted to be here for my kids but also bring in money to support us.
However, like most things have gone in my life, it has been a process to get to where I am now.
I started years ago with searching (and searching and searching and searching) for work at home opportunities and companies that hire work at home workers. However, as I am sure you may have encountered, sometimes, there is a vast amount of information, that doesn’t always help much (and the scams? don’t get me started!)
So, about 4 to 5 years ago, I found a job called a Virtual Assistant. Investopedia explains it as:
A virtual assistant is an independent contractor who provides administrative services to clients while operating outside of the client’s office. A virtual assistant typically operates from a home office but can access the necessary planning documents, such as shared calendars, remotelyhttps://www.investopedia.com/terms/v/virtual-assistant.asp
It Started with a prayer…
I felt that I would be perfect for this type of position and found a company that hires workers to do these kinds of jobs, however, they did not hire in my state.
So, driving home one day, I started praying and felt the sun start to shine brighter on me and told God that I felt like I would be perfect as a Virtual Assistant, but the company I found didn’t hire in my state and I had no idea what to do or where to go from there, but, I really wanted to try my hand at it.
A few months later, I remember finding an opportunity on FB about a Virtual Assisting internship- a 3 month opportunity- unpaid, but in return for the work during the internship, I would receive this woman’s course for free and a weekly coaching session with her to discuss the work and what should would need done and how to do the next required tasks.
I felt this was perfect so I applied. When she let me know I had an interview, I may or may not have danced in my kitchen singing and thanking God for the opportunity and praying that I would be chosen.
After the interview, I was certain that I would not be chosen. I felt like it didn’t go well and I wouldn’t get it, but I prayed and let God know that no matter what, I was ok with it.
A few days later, she let me know that I was one of 4 chosen and she would let us know a few days later who she picked.
She picked me!!!
Again, I may or may not have been found in my kitchen singing and thanking God for this amazing opportunity.
After completing the 3 month internship in May of 2016, I started trying to find a client on FB. 1 month later, I signed a contract with my client and we are still working together today.
Yes, but how can I become a Virtual Assistant?
My top 3 tips if you want to become a Virtual Assistant (or VA for short) are:
- Believe that you can do it- if you are a praying person, pray about it.
- Do your research and brainstorm ideas on what you can offer.
- Join FB groups to network with others- networking is the best way to find clients to assist.
